BPI-Guimaras joins International Coastal Clean-up
Jordan, Guimaras-the Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center participated in the conduct of 31st International Coastal Clean-up in the province of Guimaras on October 25, 2016.
With this year’s theme, “Bayan ko Linis ko: Partnering Towards People’s Environment Movement”, the activity aims to remove waste from sea, control the disposal of trash, raise awareness and encourage local constituents to save the environment against hazards of marine debris from shorelines by transforming them into renewable materials.
Highlights of activity include the commitment of support and coastal clean-up at Brgy. Hoskyn, Jordan, Guimaras by different government agencies, local government units and private organizations with the local community. Hundreds of sacks of waste like plastics, marine debris, empty containers and other unwanted materials along the shorelines were collected and properly disposed.
To ensure sustainability of the program, a continuous clean-up in the area to be spearheaded by the local government unit was suggested. Waste Management and Entrepreneurship Project (Hoskyn Kadagatan kag Kababaihan-H2K) was also launched, which aims to provide local constituents livelihood especially the unemployed women’s group in the community through recycling of waste products into a usable and productive one. With this, disposal of waste in the sea or at the shorelines will be minimized.

BPI-Guimaras partakes on 2016 Techno Forum, Exhibits and Research Symposium
“Advancing Science and Technology towards Inclusive Growth (ASTIG) in Region 6” is this year’s theme of Western Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC) Techno Forum, Exhibits and 26th Research Symposium.
This annual activity was participated by Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center being one of the consortium member agencies of WESVAARRDEC. The Center took part in booth exhibits, where important technologies and information like good agricultural practice (GAP) on mango, National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) registered strains of Guimaras ‘Carabao’ mango and production of low-sugar and sulfite-free dried mangoes were showcased. Different information, education and communication (IEC) materials on matured technologies on mango in the form of brochures were also distributed to interested individuals.
Moreover, the Center’s completed research; “Biological control of fruit flies using Beauveria bassiana through autodissemination” was presented during the research symposium, where it bagged 3rd price on biological science research category.
The Center’s participation to this activity is part of strengthening its linkages and collaboration with other research agencies in Region 6 and to promote and disseminate important information and technologies on mango.
