The Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center (BPI-Guimaras NCRDPSC) in collaboration with Department of Agriculture Regional Office 6 and local government units concerned conducted series of trainings on good agricultural practice (GAP) on mango in Western Visayas (Region 6).

The training which aimed to update mango growers and extension workers on the latest technologies on mango production was conducted in two venues, Buenavista, Guimaras last June 13-14, 2016 and Bago City, Negros Occidental held on July 20-21, 2016.  A total of 61 participants attended the two-day training lecture which covers a topic on good agricultural practices on fruits and vegetables, GAP on bearing mango, general pesticide information and safety.

The said activity is in support to the high-value crops development program (HVCDP) of the Department of Agriculture and promotion on the adoption of good agricultural practices on crops for a safe and sustainable production.

It’s mango season once again in the island province of Guimaras and to celebrate the bountiful harvest of the world renowned mango, an annual Manggahan Festival is being celebrated from May 11-22, 2016.

This year’s celebration involves different government and private organizations, local government units, associations and other stakeholders. The Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-Guimaras NCRDPSC) annually supports and took part on the different activities during the festivity.

One of the activities supported by the Center is the Farmers’ and Fisherfolks Day held on May 13, 2016.  Participated by some 350 farmers, fisherfolk and other stakeholders, the one- day event highlighted the different technologies on farming and fishing, distribution of quality planting materials, talent competition of different farmers and fisherfolk organization and farmlympics (fun games and other related activities on farming and fishing). During the event, the Center distributed quality planting materials (300 grafted seedlings), various vegetable seeds (squash, ampalaya, pole sitao, okra, eggplant, cucumber, tomato and cow pea) and potted herbs (chives, holy and sweet basil, tarragon, gynura and herba buena), which benefitted 211farmers and other stakeholders.

Moreover, during the National Government Agencies (NGAs) day and night, the Center joins the one shop stop set-up for NGAs.  Information concerning the Center’s services was presented and IEC materials on different matured technologies on mango were distributed. Talents competition among the agencies highlighted the concluded the event at night.  Grand parade during the final day of Manggahan festival and the Foundation day of the province of Guimaras was also participated by the Center.

The Center’s participation to the different activities of Manggahan festival did not only strengthened ties and collaboration with the provincial government of Guimaras LGUs and other agencies but also an avenue to extend services and materials assistance to farmers and other stakeholders. The Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center (BPI-Guimaras NCRDPSC) conducted training on mango processing on April 20-22, 2016 at Calaya, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.

The 3-day training was attended by 31 participants, mostly women eager to gain knowledge and skills on mango processing, specifically on pickles, atsara, juice and dried mango production.

The training will not only equip the local women on how to produce different mango processed products but at the same time provide them additional source of income.  Moreover, it will also help address the lack of supply of mango processed products in the province of Guimaras.  It could be noted that Guimaras is known for its mangoes, both fresh and processed products.

The Bureau of Plant Industry – Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-GNCRDPSC) conducted a consultation dialogue of mango stakeholders for good agricultural practices (GAP) adoption cum mango field day on April 14, 2016.  The activity was conducted to encourage mango growers, farmers and stakeholders to adopt the recommended good agricultural practices (GAP) on mango and apply for certification.  It also wanted to showcase the production of other high value crops including vegetables, herbs and spices.

Highlighted on the one-day activity were the ceremonial harvesting of mango, inauguration of newly renovated postharvest and processing laboratory, led by Assistant Secretary for Planning and Project Development and BPI OIC Director Paz Benavidez II.  The Center’s GAP production management system on mango was presented and a consultation dialogue with the farmers and stakeholders was held.

Provincial Board Member, Diosdado Gonzaga assured the local government’s unwavering support to the Center and its project most especially in improving and promoting Guimaras mangoes. Assistant Director for High Value Crop Development (HVCDP) Jennifer Remoquillo commended the growers for working so hard in producing world class mangoes. Department of Agriculture has put mango as one of the priority crops and it ensures that the value chain approach is being implemented, that necessary assistance are given to nurseries, growers, sellers and exporters. OIC Director Benavidez assured mango growers that the international market has opened its door for the Philippine fruits especially for the mangoes from Guimaras. Food Safety has become a global concern. She recommended that farmers observe Good Agricultural Practices and be certified subsequently.  This may become a compulsory requirement of the importing country soon. The growers must accept the challenges to sustain the increasing demand and be globally competitive. BPI is committed to support the development and promotion DA-GAP Program.

Technology demonstration on matured technologies on mango (fertilization, pruning, proper harvesting and postharvest handling and hot water treatment), mango processing, mushroom production and herbs utilization were also conducted.

Moreover, planting materials in form of vegetables seeds and potted herbal plants were distributed to the participants.  A total of 100 mango growers, farmers, processors, women’s group and stakeholders benefitted on the said activity. (RS Orquia & LAEugenio)
