BPI-DNCRDPSC Conducted its 2016 Pre-in-house R & D Review and Evaluation

 

The Bureau of Plant Industry - Davao National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center conducted its 2016 Pre-in-house Research and Development Review and Evaluation last May 25, 2016 at the BPI-DNCRDPSC’s Conference Room, Bago Oshiro, Tugbok District, Davao City.  The main purpose of this activity was to review, evaluate and monitor the status and accomplishments of all R & D studies being implemented by DNCRDPSC and  likewise,  recommend strategic measures for the improvement of these studies.

There were twenty-one R & D studies programmed for presentation and evaluation  of which four are completed and  seventeen are on-going.  Among the four completed studies, three were funded by DOST-PCAARRD and one by the BPI’s regular fund.  Out of the twenty-one studies, twenty R & D papers were presented, reviewed and evaluated.  

As per synthesis of the review, two completed studies under the DOST-PCAARRD’s program on S & T Management Approaches against Fusarium Wilt Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Cubense (Foc) on Cavendish in Mindanao entitled “Adaptability Trial of Seven GCTCV Somaclones against Fusarium Wilt” and “Development of Biological Control Strategies against Foc Tropical Race 4 (TR4)” which were presented by Ms. Ma. Adelfa N. Lobres (Agriculturist II) and Ms. Arceli G. Yebes (Agriculturist II), respectively, were elevated to the BPI National In-house R & D Review to be held this  coming June 15, 2016 in Davao City.  Another completed study that was identified to be elevated was the BPI regular funded study on “Screening of Banana and Plantain (Musa spp.) Collections for Fiber Extraction”  which was presented by Ms. Jonalyn A. Pabuaya (Agriculturist II).  Aside from the three completed studies, the on-going study presented by Mr. Virgilio L. Loquias (Supervising Agriculturist) entitled “Flower and Fruit Thinning in Durian”, a component study of the project on “Durian Tree Management for Optimum Production”:  under the Regional Durian R & D Program of DOST-PCAARRD was also identified to have significant findings or relevant information and tree management techniques generated that are worth for dissemination, hence, proposed to be included in the BPI-DNCRDPSC’s R&D papers for presentation in the national R&D review.

DNCRDPSC successfully held its 2016 Pre-in-house R & D Review and Evaluation with the presence of Dr. Virgie P. Ugay, a plant pathologist and faculty-researcher of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) and Dr. Lorna E. Herradura (Center Chief, BPI-DNCRDPSC) as evaluators. (May P. Loquias)

BPI-Davao Conducts Hands-on Training on Mushroom Cultivation 

 

The Bureau of Plant Industry – Davao National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-DNCRDPSC) conducted a two-day hands-on training on mushroom culture and cultivation on April 21-22, 2016. The training was conducted to capacitate and equip mushroom enthusiasts on the culture and cultivation technologies of  different species of mushroom.

Ms. Arceli G. Yebes and Ms. Ma. Adelfa N. Lobres, Research Coordinator and In-charge of DNCRDPSC’s Plant Pest and Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, respectively, facilitated and managed the two-day activity.  They demonstrated to the participants the step-by-step process in mushroom culture such as preparation of potato dextrose agar, grain spawn and substrates for different species of mushroom and the techniques on how to care and maintain mushroom cultures and culture beds. On the second day,  each participant did a hands-on practice.

After the 2 days training, the 12 participants who were mushroom enthusiasts and growers in Davao City were able to prepare their culture media, grain spawn  and fruiting bag substrates. BPI Davao Conducts Hands on Training

BPI DAVAO CENTER CELEBRATES 64th ANNIVERSARY

Center Chief Dr. Lorna Herradura, PhD warmly welcomed the employees, guests, farmers and stakeholders  during the celebration of 64th anniversary of Davao National Crop Research and Production Support Center on March 30, 2016. “BPI Katuwang sa Pagtiyak sa Ligtas, Mataas na Uri at Masaganang Ani” was the event theme. A thanksgiving Mass was also offered. Guest speaker, NSQCSD Division Chief Ruel C. Gesmundo congratulated the Center for being a catalyst of change and excellence in research in crop production not only in Davao but in Mindanao as a whole.  He wished the Center to continue its brilliant performance of BPI mission and mandate. Field Day was also held and planting materials and seedlings were distributed to farmers and stakeholders of Davao.  During the program, the employees entertained the guests by their performance of dance hits from 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000. The Anniversary displayed the bountiful produce and talents of BPI Davao Center.

BPI-DNCRDPSC Conducted an Orientation-Seminar on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)

 

The Bureau of Plant Industry – Davao National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-DNCRDPSC) conducted an “Orientation-seminar on Good Agricultural Practices”  participated by a total of 70 BPI-DNCRDPSC staffs and On-the-Job-Training students.  The said activity was held at the Farmers’ Pavilion on the 29th day of March 2016.  The seminar aimed to educate BPI-DNCRDPSC employees especially those who are working in the field on the concept and importance of the Philippine Good Agricultural Practices or PhilGAP as BPI-DNCRDPSC is on preparation for GAP certification.

The activity started with Mr. Virgilio Loquias (Supervising Agriculturist) giving a little overview about GAP and emphasized to his co-workers the importance of GAP in relation to food safety which is very beneficial to  man’s health.  Ms. Arceli G. Yebes and Mr. Cyril B. Montiel who were lately trained as GAP inspectors gave lectures on what is PhilGAP all about, food safety and the rule of selected BPI staffs as GAP inspectors.
