Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol led the launching of "TienDA Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Outlet" in the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) grounds, San Andres St., Malate, Manila on July 28, 2017.  Fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, rice, fish, crabs, native dressed chicken poured in and were sold at farm gate prices. More than 90 farmers and farm cooperatives participated from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.  In spite of heavy rains, residents from the metro came and were amazed how cheap the products were. The first tienda ran until July 30 but only few were left on the 2nd and 3rd days.

Guest of Honor, Senator Loren Legarda was very happy and impressed on how the event turned out and challenged the agency to conduct tienda more often. Manila Congressman Harry Angping and his wife Ms. Naida were also present and they encouraged DA to put up more farmers’outlets in the metro.

The TienDA Outlet is DA’s first step in the implementation of President Rody Duterte's commitment of making food available and affordable to the Filipinos.  Sec. Piñol, said that he envisioned established farmers’ outlets all over the country where the farmers earn more and consumers pay less.

The event was a huge success, in fact the generated sales reached more than Php1.2M and many were eager to participate in the next TienDA.

There will be TienDA Farmers and Fisherfolks Outlet in all Regions as well. In Manila, the Tienda is planned to be held twice a month in different locations. The 2nd leg will be on August 17-18 at the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Diliman, Quezon City.
