As one of the active members of the Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI), the Bureau of Plant Industry-Los Baños National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center (BPI-LBNCRDPSC) participated in the annually celebrated SyenSaya Festival of Los Baños. This banner program activity of LBSCFI was held on July 25-29, 2016 at Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), Los Baños, Laguna. This year’s festival was conducted in support to the simultaneous celebration of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in various regions of the country.
The joint activity that evolved around the theme “JUAN SCIENCE, ONE NATION” was a full-packed week-long event featuring several technologies and products by various institutions and organizations in the country developed through the funding of DOST-PCAARRD. The technologies and products were showcased at the DOST-PCAARRD Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC). Other highlights of the event were the open houses of Wonderama interactive science learning exhibit which was organized by the 22 member-agencies of LBSCFI, symposia and techno-scientific forums, and the celebration of 32nd and 5th anniversary of LBSCFI and PCAARRD respectively.
The Wonderama exhibit which was featured at the covered parking lot of PCAARRD was actively participated by BPI-LBNCRDPSC in partnership with National Seed Quality Council Services IV-A (NSQCS IV-A) and the Post-Entry Quarantine Station (PEQS). This served as an avenue for member institutions of LBSCFI to showcase the main functions of their agencies and the primary services and products that they offer. The BPI booth featured the offices’ mandates and activities to highlight the bureau’s role as a whole in protecting and supporting the agriculture sector in the country. Products produced in the Center such as vermicompost, conventionally and organically produced seeds, sexually and asexually propagated fruit trees, as well as seedlings of herbs were put up for sale.
An exhibit booth was also set up at DIPTC to showcase the Vegetable Grafting Technology which was developed in the Center through the funding of DOST-PCAARRD.
The one-hectare technology demonstration field for organic lowland vegetable production, another project funded by DOST-PCAARRD and implemented by BPI, was likewise opened for public visit.
Aside from promoting the town of Los Baños as the premier science and technology tourism destination, the festival also aims to increase the awareness of the young generations in the vital role of science and technology in their daily life. This will inspire and hone young minds that would later develop to be competitive scientists who will continually conduct and innovate researches for a better quality of life. Thus, majority of the spectators of SyenSaya came from different public and private schools of Los Baños, neighboring towns and provinces. Farmers, science-enthusiasts, media personnel and other individuals also graced the said event.
